Lenovo Names Former Dell Executive Amelio New CEO

Tuesday December 20, 6:13 PM EST

In what its calling its next stage of growth, computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK), announced Tuesday the appointment of William Amelio as president and chief executive effective immediately.

Amelio, 48 years old, will take over for Stephen Ward, who the company credited with integrating its acquisition of International Business Machines Corp. (IBM)'s (IBM) personal-computer business.

"We have reached the target to integrate two organizations together and achieve stability of our business," said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's Chairman, in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires. "For our next step of integration and growth our board decided Bill Amelio's background is right for the company." Ward plans to serve as a consultant to Lenovo and to assist in the transition to a new CEO.

Amelio, most recently senior vice president of Dell Inc. (DELL) (DELL), has held senior executive and operating roles at NCR Corp. (NCR) (NCR), Honeywell International Inc. (HON) (HON), AlliedSignal (HON) and IBM.

While Amelio said it's too early to say how Lenovo will grow, he did say he will focus on execution. Amelio noted that he is in the process of putting together a plan for the first 100 days.

"I think its absolutely an excellent opportunity," said Amelio.

As for any lingering concerns over an Asian company taking over IBM's corporate computer customers, Yuanqing said its been a non-event.

"Among the top 300 or 400 (IBM) customers we have already grown sales be several percent," said the chairman.
