TV-PC Unified Display Interface UDI to Replace VGA

Electronics Firms Plan To Update PC-TV Link

SAN FRANCISCO -- A group of big electronics companies, including Intel Corp. and Apple Computer Inc., are proposing a new way to hook computers to high-definition TVs and other consumer-electronics products.

The companies said they are working to develop a specification known as the unified display interface, or UDI. The goal is to replace a nondigital technology called VGA that has long been used in connecting PC monitors, and plug into sockets on TVs and other products that use a technology called HDMI, for high-definition multimedia interface.

Other supporters of the effort include Samsung Electronics Co., National Semiconductor Corp. and Silicon Image Inc. Steve Tirado, Silicon Image's president and chief executive officer, predicted that PCs that include UDI connections are up to two years away. UDI will support a content-protection technology that now works with HDMI, and is supported by movie studios worried about piracy of high-definition movies, he added.
