Of course. This talk about research is a way to say they are doing science. What I assume they mean, if we take them in terms of their own words, is that they need to work on public opinion more. One of them disavowed that in the piece but that's, frankly, the only thing it can mean.

At best, they can make a case for a Kuhnian like paradigm. But Kuhn made the point, quite forcefully, that those were paradigms within science that changed as a result of anamolies, not paradigms from outside that changed as a result of political comings and goings.
