A guy called me today from Apple's "Enterprise Division" (formerly NeXT). Their number is (800) 879 6398. After some discussion, he said he understood the upcoming developer release will have rhapsody (with nextstep and object C) plus a scaled down version of Web Objects. Basically, he said the following:

1) It seems that the developer's release of WebObjects, which will be competing against Microsoft's FrontPage, will allow only limited linkage to databases (like maybe just FileMaker or some flat spreadsheet - no relational ODBC).

2) Apple feels that developing software for the enterprise (ie connecting to Oracle or any ODBC database) should cost a bundle - and he even quoted licenses around $25,000.

3) The last time I talked to the enterprise guys they even talked about wanting a percentage of any software applications you develop and sell.

4) I tried to point out to him that FrontPage ($150) allows you to create an entire web station and link any ODBC database.

This left me very confused and angry about the apple pricing structure. It looked like Apple was trying snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by pricing their product way out of the market as they did with Lisa and NeXT.

I then dialed the Apple developers line (800) 633 2152.

The guy there was very friendly and pointed out that prices are at their web site:

gemma.apple.com

and developer prices start as low as $250 - which will get you rhapsody (due out in about a month) with WebObjects included.

He said there is no royalty charge on any executables created and he said that WebObjects included in this developer package will have the ability to link ODBC databases like Oracle, etc. - A direct contradiction of the guy I just talked to at the enterprise edition.

I don't know which way is up (they can't both be right)!

Do you know anything about this?
