From the "thanks for clearing that one up!" pile....

I've asked repeatedly what is the difference (if any) between a "marriage" and a "gay civil union", and CNN on reporting Elton's union added zero clarity.

It gives gay couples the same property and inheritance rights as married heterosexuals and entitles them to the same pension, immigration and tax benefits. But unlike in Belgium, Spain and Canada it is not a marriage.

Uhmmmm, ok. Why not?

According to the next paragraph, one disctinction is that civil unions are purely contractual, whereas marriages require a verbal promise.

The procedure is an exclusively civil one in Britain, with the partners merely signing documents, whereas a marriage becomes binding when partners exchange spoken words in a civil or religious ceremony.

If that's the only difference between a civil union and a marriage (the verbal commitment) I still don't see what all the fuss is about.
