I doubt it. When they start out being nice, and aware that they are influencing lives, most of them remain as nice guys.

Your former neighbor sounds like the kind that cares enough to get ahead, and make the necessary moves to better his condition, which is an ingrained trait that will stay with him wherever he goes. IMO, he is one of the minority though.
