S.Korea Panel to Give First Stem - Cell Probe Results By REUTERS Published: December 22, 2005 Filed at 7:58 p.m. ET Skip to next paragraph SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean panel will release interim results on Friday of its investigation into the work of the country's most prominent stem-cell scientist, who faces accusations of fraud by collaborators. The nine-member investigation committee from Seoul National University has already interviewed the scientist, Hwang Woo-suk, and several dozen of his team members. It has also collected data from their laboratory. The panel's televised news conference is scheduled to start at 0200 GMT. The panel has also started DNA testing on cells provided by Hwang that he says were part of his landmark paper on producing tailor-made embryonic stem cells. The paper on tailor-made embryonic stem cells, which have the ability to develop into any type of human tissue, was hailed in the scientific community because such a discovery could one day lead to genetically matched tissue being generated to treat diseases such as Parkinson's. Hwang has asked the U.S. journal Science, which published the May 2005 paper, to withdraw the work because of the storm of controversy it has generated but stands by his findings.
