ADI signs licensing agreement with Amati (Part I)

Hurray!! Finally we can the Amati crowd to stop whining and bitching about how Aware is stealing their technology. This affects ADI much more than Aware because Aware's line code didn't infringe on any of Amati's patents. So we will have to go through this same nonsense with USRX/TI/Aware.

Amati Communications Licenses ADSL DMT Patents to Analog Devices, Inc

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Amati Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:
AMTX), today announced a license agreement with Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI) for
certain patents covering ANSI-compliant Discrete Multi-tone (DMT) technology used in
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) modems.

Amati Communications is the developer of DMT, the standard technology used in a new
high-speed data service known as ADSL. Amati provides license rights to this technology to all
interested parties on a fair and equitable basis.

As the leading maker of chipset solutions for ADSL modems, and as having the industry's first
ANSI-compliant ADSL chipset (AD20msp910-) designed to DMT standards, Analog
Devices will license patents from Amati to support open standards and interoperability for this
form of high-speed data and video communications.

James Steenbergen, President and CEO of Amati Communications said, "This agreement
substantiates the importance of ADSL for the future access marketplace and further confirms
the advantages of a standards-based technology. It is another example of the value of DMT
technology for future high-speed services over existing copper infrastructure."

Amati's DMT technology is a multicarrier modulation technique that provides the ability to
move signals at up to 8 Mbps or greater over existing telephone lines. DMT ADSL is an
effective means of transmitting high-speed data over existing copper phone lines for high-speed
Internet access, interactive services, broadcast quality video, and video-on-demand to many
subscribers.

The DMT technology, developed and patented by Amati, is an international standard for
ADSL recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This standard has been accepted by Analog
Devices and other semiconductor manufacturers engaged in ADSL chipset development and
by a growing number of telecommunications and data communications equipment and service
providers. The standard provides more than 8 Mbps transmission from a telephone company's
central location to a remote user, as well as a bi-directional channel capable of transmitting 640
Kbps over existing phone lines.

Amati Communications Corporation

Amati is a pioneer and leading developer of advanced transmission equipment utilizing DMT
technology for the ADSL, Very High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) and xDSL
markets. Amati is the holder of the ADSL/DMT patents and has licensed the technology to
companies such as Analog Devices, Inc., Motorola and Nortel. The ADSL/DMT technology,
recently selected by BC TEL, Canada for a proposed roll-out of commercial ADSL services,
is an effective means of transmitting high-speed data over existing copper phone lines, making
Internet access, interactive services, broadcast quality video and video-on-demand realizable
to many subscribers.

Amati also provides network connectivity systems for the internetworking and OEM
marketplaces. The company's connectivity products include local area network gateways,
client-based workstation software and network data communications interfaces. For more

NOTE: Statements made in this press release which are not historical, including statements
regarding product development, demonstration, product capabilities, availability and markets,
and the negotiation of definitive agreements are forward looking statements and as such are
subject to a number of risks including that the market for ADSL Products is still under
development, is highly competitive and is subject to rapid technological change. See the
Company's Annual Report and Form 10-K for the 1996 fiscal year and other reports filed with
the Securities and Exchange Commission for additional disclosure regarding such factors.
