I want to be sure there is a clear distinction between doing productive work, like our archeologist, and creating wealth, like our widget factory owner. I don't think we can afford to discourage the latter because then there are no jobs and everyone suffers.

I could be wrong, but I don't think, after a certain point, that the primary reason the widget maker continues to make his widget is to see his bank balance grow.

I think there are a lot of things going on.

He likes being boss.

He likes the power to hire and fire workers.

He likes to make a terrific widget.

He likes to make a terrific widget at a terrific price.

He likes to organize things.

Public policy does not have to be stupid. Enlightened public policy could advance civilization in a positive way.
