It doesn't tell WHEN those reductions occurred.

EXACTLY - that's why I attached that blurb (it's 4 years old).
However I got the impression to105 concluded based on Forbes article that the reduction from 5300 to 2300 occurred recently which is NOT the case.
Lam did not hire back during the upturn rather sourcing it out; the advantage is a more stable company with less headcount fluctuations. I don't believe there was RIF at Lam this year at all.

Dec 20, 2001 - Lam Research Announces Workforce Reduction

FREMONT, Calif. - Lam Research Corporation (Nasdaq: LRCX) today announced it is reducing its global work force by approximately 12 percent. Approximately 400 employees are being affected. The company will record a restructuring charge against financial results for the quarter ending December 2001.

“We made this difficult decision to address the current market environment and size our operations accordingly,” stated James W. Bagley, Lam’s chairman and chief executive officer. While our near-term expectations about the business environment have not changed, the decline in the last two quarters was greater than we anticipated and required today’s actions. We remain committed to investing in research and development activities and believe that our strong product position will enable the company to demonstrate solid market share growth when the industry recovers,” Bagley concluded.

Based on that blurb headcount was 2900 after Dec. 2001 layoffs

3300 x .12 = 396

Headcount of 5000+ sounds very high - my employee # was 2xx
