AOL Could Speed Google's Undoing

______________________________________________________

The big news this week was Google's billion-dollar investment
in AOL. That is provided the deal gets shareholder approval,
which will have to happen over the objection of dissident
shareholder Carl Icahn. His concern is that the Google deal
may preclude a more profitable (for AOL) arrangement with
some other company, like Microsoft, Yahoo, or eBay.

I think the big story of 2006 and beyond will be whatever
happens between Google and Microsoft, something I've
discussed in a previous column, written back when it looked
like Microsoft might become AOL's partner.

As for the AOL/Google deal, the future may bring an unsavory
creature to your Web browser: Google ads with images, sold
by AOL. My concern is that Google may be venturing too far
from what made it successful, perhaps leaving a gap that
Microsoft can fill by being a better Google than Google.
Indeed, AOL could speed Google's undoing.
