Oh, I certainly agree with you about Valenzuela. He could easily have condensed his ideas in a much much smaller though forceful essay.

Your link to the Tehran news article headlined "Iran hails “first Islamist Arab state” in Iraq Fri. 23 Dec 2005" was not unexpected, and previously discussed here. Ironic, isn't it, that sometimes democracy produces results not welcomed (to say it mildly) by the impositioners of democracy. Now what do they do after all the public b.s. that the reason for war was to bring peace and democracy to Iraq (another piece of b.s. btw.)? On the surface, it seems they are trapped by their own words and deeds. But I seem to remember the question was posed to Herr Rumsfeld, who stated that a religious Islamic government would not be allowed.

So, this will indeed get interesting. Maybe, as the article suggests, the election will be challenged or nullified? But either way, it looks like big trouble ahead for the Americans. The one thing that bothers me, however, is the idea that they (Americans) would have been fully aware of the consequences of the likelihood of a Shiite majority win, and must therefore have a plan in hand, I would think.
