Energy prices

Energy prices -- already pushed higher by the Iraq War, sharply increasing demand from China and India, and production bottlenecks -- spiked in September when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita disrupted refining and distribution capacity. Average gasoline prices topped $3 a gallon in September (some markets saw far higher prices), leading President Bush to suggest that Americans try to drive less. Gasoline demand did edge down after Katrina, but as prices declined later in the year, Americans put their feet back on the gas pedal.
