Pope John Paul

John Paul II died on April 2 at the age of 84, ending a 26-year reign as pope -- one of the longest in the papacy's history. Down-to-earth and charismatic, he visited more world leaders and ordinary people than any of his predecessors. He survived a 1981 assassination attempt, criticized Catholics who questioned the church's teachings, and was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. German-born Pope Benedict XVI, 78, succeeded Pope John Paul II on April 19, becoming the 265th pope.
