The Law of Dying

The national debate over euthanasia reached a boiling point when Terri Schiavo died in late March, almost two weeks after a feeding tube that kept her alive was removed. The 41-year-old had suffered severe brain damage 15 years earlier and fell into what doctors called a persistent vegetative state. For years her parents fought to keep her husband Michael from having the feeding tube removed. Just a day before her death, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal to have the tube reinserted.
