In early October an earthquake shook portions of Pakistan, Afghanistan and northern India, leveling entire towns, killing some 87,000 people, and leaving more than 3 million homeless. Rescue and relief efforts were nearly impossible for many remote villages. After the ruinous quake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, the region endured more than 1,200 aftershocks. Pledges of aid have surpassed $5.8 billion.
