Sarge: Popcorn + Passion:…
Of course it is, but I don't see the same level of passion. Perhaps Ontario’s voter’s passion level would increase proportionally if their per capita tax levels that are applied to Equalization were closer to Alberta’s. Of course, the voter’s cognition would apply here also. There’s nothing like actually reading one’s pay stub and asking: “OK, where’s all this (my) money going?” The answers are out there… That’s how I became interested in politics. When I job-transferred here from Manitoba in ’73, I had a surprising revelation. “Go For It!” That was the general attitude to an idea that seemed plausible. The worst that could happen was that it would not work, in which case Plan B or going back would apply. Entrepreneurial Freedom! I would kill to have your overall tax rates.
I also see the people in trouble through no fault of their own, and they are up against a brick wall… but be much more compassionate to others. Yup! Agree completely. First a hand out, then a hand up. Yes, there are those that cannot help themselves, but many can do (a limited) something. One really cannot help anybody who does not wish to help themselves. Me: “a welfare state that entraps its recipients into being servile to the Feds.”
Ahhh… The Mulroney factor. Highest unemployment : I cannot remember, but I would guess that the U.S. also had similar unemployment levels during this timeframe. Around here there’s a saying: “When the U.S. catches the sniffles, Canada catches the cold.” That’s because our economies are so closely tied together, and they are about 10x our population. Our cold often lags their sniffles timeframe wise.
Mulroney became Prime Minister after Trudeau (technically after Trudeau, Clark, Trudeau, and Turner.) Yes, the very same Trudeau that implemented the NEP in Oct. 1980. Trudeau’s NEP was an admirable attempt to protect the Rest of Canada from high energy costs by raping (mostly) Alberta. It didn’t work, it only delayed the inevitable. Once the mass was in motion, the momentum was too hard to stop.
Canadian Prime Ministers get coated with Teflon just before their swearing in ceremony. It’s a Canadian tradition! Didn’t Brian successfully sue (the RCMP?) and win for ‘derogatory’ comments? Didn’t Jean inadvertently present physical evidence at the Gomery Inquiry that he had in his personal possession golf balls that were paid for by Canadian Taxpayers? “In for a penny, in for a pound?”, or is that an actual quotation?
Mulroney’s Legacy will always be the GST. I Hate the GST, and I Love the GST.
I Hate the GST because it costs me more to purchase a lotta stuff, and it’s right there in my face I Love the GST because it’s right there in our faces and it costs us more to purchase a lotta stuff! Our Federal Government at work. A lotta people don’t get that part of the equation. The GST, for the most part, replaced a “manufacturer’s tax” that was imposed on goods manufactured in Canada, and also imported. This was a “Hidden Tax” as few Canadians actually knew of its existence. Uhmmm… Didn’t the liberals once campaign to “Axe that (GST) Tax”?
You are correct in supposing that for my choice, Harper is the best answer. Best is a relative term. Rather than do a top-down evaluation of the parties and their leaders, I’ll prefer to do a bottom up elimination.
Green: I’m not a believer that modern day mankind is causing Global Warming; just as I didn’t believe that modern day mankind caused the Ozone Layer Holes. Somehow I feel that the Green Party has a hidden agenda that will make the Kyoto Accord seem like a parking ticket.
Bloq Quebecois: They aren’t running enough candidates to become a majority. AFAIK they ain’t runnin’ a candidate in my riding, I feel Duceppe is the ‘most presentable’ “as seen on TV” leader though.
NDP: Jack Layton as PM… And someone like Buzz Hargrove as Deputy PM. Yeah, that’ll really propel Canada into the lead of the G8. :-( Don’t worry; the “Evil Corporations” will pay for all of it. :-( Oops, who pays all those union members their wages… “Evil Corporations”? Oops again, who pays those increased costs received by the “Evil Corporations”? The Consumer?
liberals: Ya want me to list their recent accomplishments that actually benefited Canada? How about a much much longer list that didn’t benefit Canada, but cost us multi-billions? Have you had enough of the Liberals yet?
That leaves Harper and the Conservatives. See above re: Entrepreneurial Freedom.
Yup, It’s kinda fun to know that our contributions to this thread *MAY* result in the changing of a singular vote or two. :-)
