Though I haven't conducted a survey, I would guess that electricity is simply not a major priority for most datacenter managers.

Look at the table I posted above. eia.doe.gov Electricity prices have been stagnant for over a dozen years. That means in real terms, they have declined substantially. Compare that with the price of oil or gasoline. Yet how many corporate fleets of Priuses do you see out there? The hard-nosed guys who make these decisions don't seem to care much about the environment. They want it simple and cheap.

But I'm not a datacenter manager either, just an investor. I think the SWaP (space requirements, watts of power, and speed)metric that Sun has suggested is an important step forward in getting such managers to consider their total costs of ownership. Initial costs and switching costs will also be important factors. I would love to see examples of real numbers hung on these variables leading to real world server decision-making.
