Spotted,

Our gun problem is very different than the US and has not been imported from the US IMO, much as we watch the same violent television and movies. It is not a "Canadian" handgun culture that is responsible for the surge in shootings (we have always had our violence, but more typically with knives rather than guns, and certainly not the shoot-out at the shopping mall kind), but rather a Caribbean-originated tough-guy youth handgun subculture that is responsible for many of the worst and most sensational handgun incidents in Toronto. In fact, if you removed a few areas of Toronto (say Jane & Finch, some areas of Scarborough, and a couple other major government housing projects in Toronto) the crime rate, at least as far as gun related crime goes, would likely change dramatically. Mississauga just next door is the lowest crime rate major city in Canada, and Toronto could be similar for the vast majority of its demographics except than a significant population of Jamaica, which as a country has the third highest murder rate in the entire world behind Colombia and South Africa, has moved to Toronto and brought in gangster ideas in some of its youth. It's not politically correct to say, but that is what I have seen with my own eyes. If you are going to fix a problem, first you have to see it for what it really is. This is what we have a national gun registry for? Do people at Jane & Finch dutifully go to register their handguns?
