Are we defending the GDP or the country? Why does military spending have to go up with GDP?

In the post you replied to I also said
"It can be argued that our defense needs have gone down so much that this low level of spending is more than enough. Also our economy has grown so much that even though the burden of defense is historically low the actual amount spent in real dollar terms is not even if it is lower than social spending."

The level of the GDP determines the affordability of the spending. There is no reason why military spending, or most other spending HAS to go up with the GDP but if the percentage of GDP spent is small it is unrealisitic to present it as a crushing burden or as a major national problem.

Our military is much smaller than it used to be despite Iraq and other situations like Afghanistan. I think you don't support us being in Iraq, but do you support us not even having the capability to wage a campaign like Iraq should a situation come along that you feel would better justify war?

Edit - Re: "And on your numbers, is Iraq included?"

In my statement that you quoted - "The only times that I can think of since WWI when the % was lower was during the 30s and during Clinton's 2nd term. In both of those cases the percentage was not a lot lower." Iraq is included. It is also apparently included in the charts judgeing by the level shown but the page doesn't explicitly say it is.
