On the contrary, capitalism encourages excess. Whether its commercials or tv programming or film, we are encouraged to buy more. TV commercials aren't really capitalism as such but rather they are one one people decide to act in a free market. Capitalism is giving them the freedom to do this and yes if they have the freedom to do it and it is in their self interest they probably will do it, but I wouldn't call providing this freedom something that deserves scorn or blame. I am not suggesting to take away people's freedom to choose but I think there needs to be a realignment of people's priorities that usually has to come from the top down. Like Tench, I would disagree with any "top down realignment of people's priorities" on this matter. Tim
