I prefer to think that humanity is reaching out for enlightenment, at least in the long run. It's nice to think that way, but nature operates in ways we cannot comprehend. We may become extinct or, worse, degraded, thanks to our own actions. Evolution is ruthless. And history has definitely shown that we can go forward and backward. These two forces are definitely competing at this time. We cannot safely predict that science, logic and reason will prevail over ignorance and high birth rates. Science, logic and reason bring tolerance with them as a corollary value, one which unfortunately carries within it the seed for their destruction. History is rife with examples, and we are playing out one such example as we speak. It's an impediment to progress we have not been able to solve.
