FDA Approves New Claims for Quidel's Flu Test
Published: December 29, 2005 10:01 AM

By Val Brickates Kennedy

BOSTON (Dow Jones) -- Quidel Corp. said Thursday it has received U.S. regulatory clearance to promote its ten-minute flu test kit as being useful in detecting avian influenza and highly effective in diagnosing Influenza A.

In a release early Thursday, the company said the Food and Drug Administration will allow it to market its QuickVue Influenza A+B test kit as being capable of detecting avian flu, also known as Influenza A subtype H5N1.

Shares of Quidel (QDEL) were up 22% at $11.50 in early trade.

Quidel added, however, that the kit's effectiveness in detecting avian flu has not yet been established. The product's labeling will include data on the kit's ability to detect cultured avian flu.

Quidel also said the FDA will allow the test kit to be marketed with claims that it is 94% effective in detecting Influenza A, a highly prevalent flu strain. The kit can detect the presence of the virus on a nasal swab within ten minutes.
