STMicroelectronics Joins EWC

The Enhanced Wireless Consortium welcomed a new partner as STMicroelectronics pledged to lend its expertise in low power system-on-chip (SoC) technology in formation of an IEEE 802.11n high-speed wireless standard, also known as next-generation WiFi.

The EWC, formed in October, has promised to improve the performance of wireless local area networks through industry-wide support of its standard specifications, based on MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology. "MIMO technology delivers significant improvements in throughput, as well as greater range and more reliable links -- all key requirements for the fast growing converged WiFi/Cellular device market," said Edoardo Merli, deputy general manager of ST's Wireless LAN Business Unit.

ST's work will focus on WiFi/Cellular convergence that allows a single device to seamlessly operate over different protocols. The company's aim is to ensure new high throughput features are streamlined with the requirements of handheld products to improve mobile operations, battery life, and extend coverage.

WiFi/Cellular convergence has gotten support from Qualcomm, which offers a WLAN solution that enables mobile handsets to connect to wireless LAN and cellular networks. (See Qualcomm Helps Cellular and WiFi Voice Harmonize.)

The potential and popularity of WiFi technology along with EWC's push to improve networks could spell trouble for other emerging technologies such as WiMAX, according to some studies. (See InStat: Uncertainty Rules WiMAX Market.)

Another InStat study suggests dual-mode phones will drive the sale of VoIP chips for the next few years. (See Dual-Mode Phones Will Drive 2009 VoIP Chip Sales, Says In-Stat.)
