The poor from other nations migrate to the US because they believe they can have a better life. That vision is not unlike the girl in the Midwest who believes that she can become an actress if she moves to Hollywood, or a model if she moves to NYC. Most don't find success whether they are that Midwest girl or a poor immigrant from Brazil but the dream continues to exist because there's no real alternative.

They might not find the level of success they had imagined they would, but most people moving from the rural Midwest to NYC or LA do make more money, and most people moving from Brazil or Mexico to the US make a lot more (and make more even after adjusting for our higher cost of living).

The issue wasn't about making money......it was about having a good life. The girl from Kansas may make more money but that was not the dream. She wanted to be an actress or a model. The immigrant's dream may not have been about money but to escape political oppression or to be freely gay or to marry someone of his own choosing instead of being picked by his parents.

Please note how quickly you transformed it from a dream to making money.

Having met both kinds of people when I was in LA, I would say the results are mixed. Very few girls ever become models or actresses.......the odds are very much against them. Often, they chase the dream for too long and end up alone or in a dead end job. The illegal immigrant often ends up living 6-10 to a one bedroom apt, sending money back to the family and going back a couple months out of the year. The legal immigrant may find freedom but at a cost. We continue to be a society that generally is xenophobic. The immigrant's best hope is for his children and their success and happiness. Some times that works and some times it doesn't.
