Good questions. I don't think discount brokers handle custodial issues for IRAs. I am going to do some research into this.

These two handle precious metals IRAs although I have not personally dealt with them but know someone who has used the first one:

churchtrust.com

sterling-trust.com

As you may suspect there are carrying costs with each of the two organizations listed above. (Basically storage fees..)

FWIW it appears I may have been wrong about IRAs being restricted to the American issue coins (I think the rules may have been expanded..) Although the rules specifically state that American Eagle Gold, Silver, and Platinum coins are eligible, it appears that Gold, Silver, And Platinum bullion from government mints that are .995 fine for (Gold and a little higher for Platinum and Silver) or better are also eligible. (Such as the Australian Lunar series, the Canadian Maples, the Chinese Pandas, or the Austrian Philharmonics..)
