Kirk: Great information. Bandai reports that from 15 June, Tamagotchi
has been available with a "pause" feature. Tiger reportedly may
be adding "pause" to its Giga Pet, and I have it that Playmates
will follow suit with its Nano Pals. With summer ended, the school
year will provide the toughest of tests to gauge the durability of
this fad. It is encouraging that the virtual pet phenomenon, as you
relate, is attracting its proponents as tools to teach responsibility.
As I reported here some time ago, I met a mother of twins who told
me that every woman contemplating motherhood should care for a
virtual pet (necessarily, one without a "pause" feature) before-
hand. The incessant demands of the little beastie might give the
prospective mother "pause" and an opportunity for further reflection.
