Somewhere, sometime, you have to figure Bush is trying to do the right thing.

I do figure that. I also realize that he sometimes does the self-serving thing. In many scenarios there's no way to tell which is which.

Of course not.

I wasn't bashing Bush. I was asking a straight question. If what the Times reported threatened intelligence operations, then there should be somewhere in what was published a secret that is no longer secret. If you can't identify the secret, then how can you take on faith that there was one? It is illogical to do so.

But what it does tell them [if they are smart enough to pick up on it] is that our data mining operation picks up everything they do, even when they think we can't.

That's just it. They are smart. They're smart enough to figure that we've been data mining without that fact being "leaked." So there's no new information here. Maybe a confirmation, maybe some awkward attention to it, but no new information.

I'm sorry, Bill, but if there is nothing published that wouldn't already have been known or assumed, then that claim is baseless.

I understand the instinct to give Bush and any anti-terrorism activities the benefit of the doubt. Believe it or not, I do that, too. But I'm a curious soul and I'd like to know if there is any substance in this particular claim that the Times let some cat al Qaeda didn't know about out of the bag. As of now I can't identify it.
