JCP, That's a straw man argument - here's another one. How about a teacher who's lived in his house for 20 years, accumulated considerable equity, gets cancer and sells tax free to afford treatment? Just as likely as YOUR tale, probably MORE so.

There are winners and losers to any targeted tax break. Jim can speak for himself, but I'm all for a flatter tax with few breaks.

Unfortunate, tax breaks have become the new method of government dole money. Need to perk up real estate? Lure a high-tech firm into your area? Encourage more fuel-efficient hybrids? Can't draw directly from the coffers and simply pay people, but you can just pass a tax break. Unfortunately, low-income households who hardly pay any taxes to begin with will lose out.
