I had a high level security clearance back in my day. I still remember some of my security briefings. There was an article in a, at the time, major news magazine which revealed classified information. We were told that to start treating it as unclassified would be "one more nail in the coffin" so to speak.
Disinformation is real, even in the 70's and 80's, and the more independent verifications of classified information given to bad guys gives them more confidence to act on it and expend less resources to verify it.
Of course, that was the "cold war".
