Russian gas supply to France falls by third
02/01/2006 - 15:26:09

French utility Gaz de France SA said today there had been a “significant deterioration” in natural gas flows from Russia, after the price dispute which led to Moscow cutting off gas supplies to neighbouring Ukraine.

State-controlled GDF also said it was “concerned” by the prospect of a longer-term reduction in supply from Russia in midwinter.

“Gaz de France confirms a significant deterioration in the quantities of Russian gas delivered since the night of Sunday to Monday,” the company said in a statement. It said the drop amounted to about 25% to 30% of typical contractual volumes.

French Industry Minister Francois Loos said on Sunday that Russia had given assurances that supply to France would not be affected by the move.

GDF says it could help to meet a protracted shortfall by purchasing more from its other suppliers, including Norway, the Netherlands, Algeria, Britain and Nigeria. As a last resort it could also draw on massive underground reserves that contain roughly 25% of France’s annual consumption.

Meanwhile, Moldova’s president said today that his country has not received any Russian natural gas for two days, and said the Russians want to double the price it has been paying.

President Vladimir Voronin called an emergency meeting with government officials and management of Moldova-gaz today to discuss the dispute. Moldova relies on Russia for all its natural gas which it receives through a pipeline from neighbour Ukraine.
