Five people rushed to hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning
Associated Press

LIVINGSTON, N.J. - Five people were hospitalized Sunday for carbon monoxide poisoning after a home heater malfunctioned and blew the toxic, odorless gas throughout the house they were in, police said.

Homeowner Daniel Roefaro called police just before 11 a.m. Sunday and said that he, his wife and three others felt strangely.

When police arrived, they found a dazed, incoherent Roefaro and four others lying scattered about the house.

Roefaro's heating system had malfunctioned, pushing carbon monoxide throughout the house instead of out the chimney, Livingston Police Chief Michael Erb said. A police search found the home had no carbon monoxide detectors.

All five were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston where their conditions are not life-threatening, Erb said.
