The horses down there live a similar life except there is a stallion turned out with the mares. They rotate the stallions to different bands of mares every year and I got a good chance to observe them over a few weeks.

When the mare is not in heat they don't want anything to do with the stallion and he lives an isolated solitary existence on the outside of the mare band. In this instance it was a little piebald mare that was in charge of the group and if the stallion got a little too frisky or flirtatious with a younger filly they would all run to her rescue kicking and screaming. The poor guy had more battle wounds than Custer!
