"That's a big if not borne out by the history of their success."

Most of their success came about because they could low ball anyone and managed to provide decent service in the bargain. The latter point as much as the former is why they became the preferred vendor for many companies. And being Intel-only was fine as long as Intel had the performance advantage and the mind share that went with it.

All three have been lost. Intel no longer has the mind share, so the halo doesn't shine on the rest of their products. Dell's service has been in decline for a while and they no longer are the cheapest. And now Rollins is saying their sales people have more important things to do than doing what is best for their customers? I've worked for companies that had that attitude, most were leaders in their particular slice of the market. None of them are around any more. There is a reason for that, and not just because they were unlucky enough to hire me...
