I had always learned that you should not have more than 30 years of mortgage, no matter how many houses that spans. Consequently when I have traded houses I have got shorter period mortages so by this time 2008 I will have no mortgage. There is almost no scenarios where retirement income comes close to a working income, so the key is low expenses.

I agree but you don't read of many people reducing their mortgages when they retire.......in fact, I read of people building new houses when they retire.
