In that respect, Clinton and Kerry were allies. We knew Dean would lose 45 states and we wanted him stopped. I fought Dean myself, and didn't need the Clintons to tell me to do it.

But give Kerry huge credit. He was written off by the press in 4th place in Iowa two weeks before the caucuses. He mortgaged everything he had and went for it, fighting back hard with truth and honesty and beating not only Dean but favorite son Gephardt and populist Edwards. It was a smashing victory. It was all fair and no dirty tricks were involved.

Contrast to the way Bush beat Kerry, purely by smears, dirty tricks, voter fraud, phony terrorist alerts and waves of 100% false negative ads. In fact, Bush actively avoided real issues and concentrated only on smears.

Kerry was "weak on defense", Bushies had Zell Miller claims, though Zell and Kerry's defence voting records were identical and Kerry is a real war hero and military expert. Not a single Bushie leader ever served in combat.
