VaTech football program is an embarrassment.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kevin Rogers took a stand. Question is, will someone in authority at Virginia Tech follow suit?
Rogers, the Hokies' quarterbacks coach, refused to bask in Monday's 35-24 victory over Louisville in the Gator Bowl. Instead, he tackled the afternoon's indelible moment: The inexcusable cheap shot Tech quarterback Marcus Vick took on a prone Louisville defender, All-America end Elvis Dumervil. "Flagrant" and worthy of ejection, according to Rogers. "Embarrassing" to Vick and the program, he added.
Rogers couldn't be more right.
Head coach Frank Beamer wouldn't go that far. He rarely does. But Beamer, or if necessary his superiors, need to discipline Vick.
Harshly.
Publicly.
ASAP.
...The defiant Vick said, "It was an accidental play. Football is football."
And the apparently dishonest Vick said Dumervil "definitely" accepted his apology.
But Dumervil and Louisville officials said the players never spoke after the game. Tech officials then said Vick waited outside the Cardinals' locker room to no avail.
Regardless, Vick's contention that Dumervil accepted his apology speaks to a troubling notion: Vick still doesn't get it. He still believes he's above the rules.
Someone needs to cure him of that notion. Now.
"I hate like hell to be talking about this after we won the game," Rogers said...

Quartebacks coach, Kevin Rogers seems to understand and I applaud him for speaking out in a clear voice.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ...even the most die-hard Hokies should be ashamed of their team's first-half conduct--and especially that of quarterback Marcus Vick.
It's a pity that such misbehavior would taint a meaningful victory.
But it did.
It's hard to say which was worse: Vick's premeditated stomp of Elvis Dumervil's left calf--or apparently lying about apologizing to Louisville's All-American after the game.
"Yeah, I talked to him. It was an accidental play and so I didn't mean to do it on purpose. I went over to apologize to him and everything's good football is football," Vick said, refusing to elaborate.
If you believe your eyes--and Dumervil's lips--there's not a grain of truth in that statement. Replays clearly showed Vick deliberately stomping on Dumervil's leg after a 9-yard second-quarter run in a move that definitely wasn't the Hokie Pokie. << fredericksburg.com <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Marcus Vick wants to to take the same path of giving fans the one-finger salute, stomping his cleats on the back of Dumervil's leg in a blatant attempt to injure a downed player if not ruin his knee and his career. Marcus should be expelled and sent directly to the NFL. Marcus is no Michael and that is a shame.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Williams added that an official attempted to push him away from Okoye, but Williams spun around and jerked his arm away, making contact with the official in the process. The official responded by tossing Williams from the game.
Williams was called for numerous personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during his career. Despite his problems with on-field authority, he said he's not too concerned about it heading into April's NFL draft, in which he is expected to be a top-10 selection.
"If I worry about the black marks, man, I won't make no money," Williams said. "All my discretions have been good and bad to me, but I just want people to understand me. I'm not no big, bad guy or nothing like that, man. I just have a passion for the game and I love to win, man."
WILLIAMS SAID HE PLANS TO REMAIN IN FLORIDA RELAXING FOR ANOTHER WEEK BEFORE HE BEGINS TO TRAIN AND PREPARE FOR HIS NFL CAREER. HE SAID HE HAS NO PLANS TO RETURN TO CLASSES IN BLACKSBURG FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER.

Jimmy Williams is the poster child for demonstrating M-E is the the only important part of T-E-A-M as usual. The TV replays clearly show his explanation is nothing but dissembling. His comment that he has no further use for VaTech gets right to the point.
Coach Beamer should stop making excuses for these NFL star wanabes. A good football program should make us proud even if we do not win every game. If he does not understand, he should go too.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Virginia Tech Hokies did win the Gator Bowl here Monday. Won it with a great fourth-quarter comeback that Vick was a big part of engineering. It should have been a fantastic feel-good tale.
It was perfect swan song for game MVP Cedric Humes, who ran for a late score. It was another tribute to the steady play of tight end Jeff King, who caught the go-ahead TD pass and now is off to show his stuff on Sundays. It was another testament to Bud Foster's defense, which recovered from a rough first half to become vicious again.
But what the Hokies won was tempered by what they lost.
They lost some respect.
They lost it late in the second quarter, when Vick looked down at his fallen opponent, raised his cleated foot and stomped on the knee of Louisville's Elvis Dumervil. If you didn't see it, you will soon. Check the highlight shows. Unfortunately for Tech, this is the highlight many will be talking about.
....
Thank the good Lord for Rogers, a stand-up guy who's not afraid to speak the truth, even if the truth is critical of one of the game's top performers. And his words mean more than anybody's. He's been Vick's most ardent supporter, his tutor, his confidant...

I am looking forward to the remaining bowl games by great schools with great respect for sportsmanship and all that means. |
