There are a number of ways to interpret that reaction. For one they cannot do much about it. (It isn't they who make the price, it's the market.) The reality however is their vested interest in a good price is manifest. They need it to raise money. Of course, again, often in weak markets a high price does you no good, as investors don't want to pay high prices unless the market is flying too, so it's a double edged sword. Then letting the stock drift down is cheaper for your stock support people and might attract bottom feeders.

For the execs to moan just makes thing more depressing so they want to keep up a brave front and keep you wondering if the value is still not there somehow.
