I've been doing essentially the same thing for a long time.

I get essentially the same results using only the 20 SMH stocks and different lengths of averages. Using a smaller number of stocks allows faster download of data and quicker calculation. I have also played with using averages of averages, using daily median (or high/low or open/close, etc.; but for now I use only closing prices. I also do a summation index on SMH and find that useful. Finally, I use similar calculations for QQQQ and SMH for confirmation of overall and tech trends (they don't always match).
