Bill,

You touched on a couple of bases. First of all, there are rumors that MOT shorted some chip shipments to Apple, 200MHz 603s I believe, this summer. This caused Apple to have to substitute hardware to some education customers. MOT was in a snit, so I've heard, about the clone flap. No lost sales that I'm aware of.

I'm also aware that Apple has a backlog of orders for its high end 9600/350s (http://www.macinsider.com/). But tight supplies of the latest and greatest chips (350MHz 604e's) isn't unusual. I don't think the 350 shortage is a result of bad blood with MOT or IBM. Apparently, orders for the high end machines won't all be filled this quarter though. :(

The Exponential suit looks like a money grab by a defunct company with nothing to lose. As I recall, one big reason Apple never went with the Exponential chips was that the company couldn't deliver the 533MHz screamers on time and in quantity. I also read somewhere that they generated way too much heat. In fact, Exponential was going to deliver a much slower chip initially, one that wasn't substantially faster that the already-planned 350MHz 604e's. Perhaps one of our better informed contributors would like to comment?

Bob

P.S. I believe Exponential was a private company.
