Hi Hawkmoon; Re: "So let me understand this.. What you're saying is that Iraq, under Saddam's brutal Ba'thist regime was NOT BROKEN, nor was it "united" against us???"

When Saddam was in power, we did not have a terrorism problem in Iraq. Invading the place has basically showed the world that we're a bit of a paper tiger.

As far as controlling terrorism, the most effective method is to have the local police deal with them. If the local government won't do that, then you use the military (and other things like diplomatic or economic power) to put pressure on them to change their mind. But the WTC attackers were mostly Saudis, without a single Iraqi.

So sure, Iraq was "united" against us, but it had no weapons to use against us. It's now clear that Saddam had his WMDs destroyed long before the invasion (just as I said was likely when Nadine asked me before the war).

Look, our problem with safety is not due to a weakness of our military nor is it related to a strength of other country's militaries. Our weakness is our vulnerability to terror. The only real way to combat it is with police efforts (including spooks of course). Go watch the movie "Munich".

By the way, as far as the attitude of the US military, I understand that Cheney didn't get a lot of cheers when he showed up in Iraq on Christmas.
