DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
January 4, 2006 7:24 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- Dell Inc. (DELL) founder and Chairman Michael S. Dell reported acquiring 8.32 million company shares through the exercise of stock options, according to a regulatory filing late Tuesday.

Dell paid exercise prices varying between $4.63 and $16.67 a share and spent a total of more than $105 million to acquire the shares, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and data provider Washington Service.

Based on Tuesday's closing price of $30.61 a share, the newly acquired shares are worth more than $254 million.

Dell was under no apparent obligation to exercise the options immediately, as the options had expiration dates ranging from March 2007 to March 2008.

Dell didn't report selling any of the shares in his most recent SEC filing. After the latest transactions, Dell reported direct ownership of more than 213 million shares worth more than $6.5 billion at Tuesday's price and indirect ownership of about 29.5 million shares through trusts and his 401(k) plan.

In addition, Dell reported a gift of 1,065 shares in his Tuesday filing, but didn't disclose the identity of the gift recipient. That transaction took place in April of last year, according to the filing.
