mcmab,
In all I see my future as a living room PC - anything else is too inflexible. The only processors with the horsepower and the cool-running are AMD. I believe I am not alone in my conclusions and that hardware will shift to software in home entertainment.
I now have something that's a lot more limited as an ambition (for the living room). My stereo died, and I want to maybe set up a jukebox, and load all of the CDs into, and maybe in the future, when the CableCard is available for PCs, to turn it into a PVR.
But now, just a jukebox. I wand this thing to be PC based, so that I can put in a big HD and load stuff lossless. I probably want 2 mirrored, so that I don't ever have to load those things again.
The problem I see is user interface. I want this thing to be not like a PC. I want a tiny screen. I have seen people modding some small Shuttle-like PCs where they put the LCD screen on front of this thing. Does anybody know if anybody sells anything like that already pre-built?
Also, fiddling with the mouse may be OK for loading the stuff, but for playing, I would like something simple like a remote control. Maybe I should be looking into Media Center Windows...
I would probably get like the cheapest Socket 939 processor for this, which should be more than enough for ripping music, and upgradable to DC, if I ever need it. Or maybe I will just wait until Socket M. I (and the kids) can certainly use some quiet time without the wife blasting music before the Socket M comes out ...
