"The problem I see is user interface."

The TV is the interface. I too will rip all of our music onto the hard drives (I'm thinking of using the Seagate Momentus notebook drives). The whole point about a hi-def TV is that it is eminently suitable as a screen. The user can interact with the whole setup via either a wireless mouse (I have to investigate which ones have long enough range) or from a laptop with remote access.

If you don't want to go this route how about just using a laptop?
