Searchers 'Discouraged' by High Carbon Monoxide Levels in Mine

TALLMANSVILLE, W. Va. -- Rescue crews drilling deep holes toward 13 miners trapped in a subterranean mine shaft today found high concentrations of deadly carbon monoxide in the underground tunnel — readings that left searchers "very discouraged."

Air pockets sampled by the drilling operation found levels of carbon monoxide that were more than three times higher than maximum safe levels. Miners would not be expected to live more than 15 minutes without air tanks, officials said.........................................................
