Family Mourns Woman Who Died Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Car Had Faulty Exhaust System

POSTED: 5:06 pm CST January 3, 2006

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wis. -- A Jefferson County family is mourning a wife and mother.

Marcie Hufford died of carbon monoxide poisoning on New Year's morning.

Police said she spent the night at a sports bar in Lake Mills where she met 26-year-old Matthew Wheeler.

The two borrowed a car without knowing it had a faulty exhaust system.

The next morning, police found the two inside the car.

Wheeler was alive. Hufford had already died.

Now her family is looking for a way to deal with what police call a tragic accident.

"Me and Jenna suffered a huge loss. She was a great mother, a good wife and a friend, and it's just our loss," said Brad Hufford, the victim's husband.

The two were in the car for about five hours before they were found.

Police continue to investigate.
