"Apple is in a unique position in that they control an O/S as well as having the consumer electronics design and marketing expertise." Why is control of the OS a factor? If I were designing such a device, I'd use Linux. Many of the required applications already exist, it has a low resource requirement and it is rock solid reliable. Which is why it is used in Tivo and other products.
