Peter...as we have learned from Enron and Worldcom...a "good" accountant can make numbers say anything they want to make them. In reality a short portfolio is at a great disadvantage in that the portfolio has to be held for the entire year. A savvy short "must" have the ability to close out a position at a moments notice. Also, the major stock winner for 2005 was up I think nearly 200%...a short position would never generate more than a 100% gain in a particular stock, so this is just another way a short portfolio is really at a disadvantage.
