Bush wanted Ken Lay as his Sec. Of Treasury. He was his first choice. That was all confirmed at the time and you can hear the Enron traders gloating about it in the movie "Enron", from the actual tapes. You can't spin this any other way. Several others with ties to Enron also joined the Bush White House in 2001.

What I heard was Ken Lay realized Enron was in trouble and begged out. Remember, Lay and the Enron top staff kept the bad news from employees and investors for many months while they personally bailed out of their stock. Just crooked-crooked unethical bastards, all of them, and all best buddy cronies of Bush. No company was closer to Bush than Enron. And vice versa.
