HRT was up strongly today based on news. It really ought not to count because the gain has little to do with January Effect. Nevertheless, I'm happy to take it. It has helped me to a 5% lead over the RUT benchmark, whereas I'd still be pretty much at par with the RUT withoug HRT.

HRT is my best January Effect pick so far, but my second best is one that I didn't mention here because it's not a net long: UGHO. I've been short UGHO for quite a while, and it declined quite a lot in 2005. Last month it showed up in my screens for January Effect. So I bought UGHO to box my short, and I'm glad I did because it is up about 30% so far in January. I wouldn't recommend being long UGHO, though. It's a comic example of a bulletin-board promotion.
